ASTRONOMY
100
Section 1

Course Goals

This course is designed to give non-science students an overview of the astronomical universe. In the course we will discuss not only what astronomers have learned about planets, stars, and galaxies, but also how they have learned what they know.

Course Expectations

To do well in this course you will need to develop and understanding of the material. Brute memorization will not work. Moreover, you must retain the basic ideas as we move along. For example, although we first meet the Doppler shift in chapter 3, you will need to remember its principles for all the rest of the course. We will use it repeatedly. Other ideas will similarly be used over and over and if you don't understand them, you are doomed.

I expect you to read the text material and to be able to answer the review questions at the end of the chapters.
